Route 183 begins at an intersection with NY 69 and Oswego County Route 23 in Amboy Center. The route heads northward, passing through the town of Amboy, where it intersects with a local road. The route is surrounded by trees and fields, with homes coming scarcely. The highway goes through the hamlet of Mud Hill, where it passes a pond. Old Street parallels Route 183 for a short distance before entering Williamstown. There, Route 183 terminates at an intersection with NY 13.[3]
NY 183 was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York. It originally began at NY 69 in Amboy Center and continued north through Williamstown to the hamlet of Redfield. In Williamstown, NY 183 had a short overlap with NY 13.[1] NY 183 was truncated on its northern end to NY 13 in Williamstown ca. 1940.[4][5] The former routing of NY 183 north of Williamstown is now part of County Route 17.[6]
The entire route is in Oswego County.
